- "Not since In The Realm Of The Senses has a film showcased sensuality in such a delicate yet potent way. White River echoes the taboo-breaking art films of the 1970s and is easily in the same class. In her first feature, Ma strikes a unique tone with a movie as beautiful and fragile as an orchid...."
- "“White River”... succeeds both as an art-house/experimental and an erotic film, with Ma Xue emerging as a filmmaker definitely worth following."
